Step 3: Reciting the ho’oponopono mantra

Sometimes the simplest of actions can yield the biggest results. The Ho-oponopono mantra or prayer is native to Hawaii. It’s a prayer of forgiveness that works to restore the balance you need in your life.

Similar to meditation, find somewhere peaceful and quiet to sit. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths. Then recite, “I forgive you. I’m sorry. Thank you. I love you,” seven or eight times. Complete the ritual with some more deep breaths and peacefulness so your body can embrace the message. Take note of how you feel when you open your eyes.

Reciting this prayer over and over – similar to a chant – cleanses the body of hurt, shame, anger, and guilt. The beginning part of this prayer acknowledges that there was wrongdoing, but the ending acknowledges love for the person you’re forgiving.
